Plantation Delft Apothecary or Tobacco Jar
These beautiful, handcrafted Delft Jars are reproductions of jars originally used in Colonial America during the 17th and 18th centuries for storing herbs, spices and leaf tobacco. Our unique, copyrighted design was inspired by several antique jars which were inscribed with the names of ports, states, plantations, families or labeled for content. These jars feature, from left to right, the Tradewinds Ship motif and the Pineapple motif.
First mentioned in the 16th century, a sea-faring colonists brought the pineapple back from the Caribbean as a strange and exotic gift, as well as a possible cash crop for the colonies. Sea captains would spear a pineapple on the iron gates of their homes, announcing to friends and neighbors that they had safely returned from sea and all were welcome. Thus, the pineapple eventually became symbolic of hospitality.
Available in blue or polychrome (multicolored) and in four sizes that are listed below (measurement is from the base of the jar to the top of the finial), the manufacturing predates the 17th century, and the decoration has been applied by hand. The glaze will not crack and will endure for many generations. The laquered brass lid never needs polishing. Lamps are also available.
These jars, with a custom-design on the bottom, have been personalized to decorate any home or office, or to commemorate a special occasion. We decorate and letter them locally in Williamsburg, Virginia. They are truly a reflection of yesteryear and a remembrance for tomorrow!!!

These reproduction Delft jars were originally designed
and copyrighted (in 1992 by LIGHTFOOT MANOR SHOPPE artist and owner Mary Lou) with several
combined ideas taken from studying antique Delft jar and tile patterns used in
colonial times. PLANTATION PINEAPPLE or TRADEWINDS SHIP are
both available in BLUE or POLYCHROME (multicolored). Jar comes with
lacquered brass lid. Replacement lids are also
available for purchase. To order, please call with the information that is
printed on the bottom of your existing jar. (A minimum $10.00 UPS charge applies for all
lid only orders). PERSONALIZE jar front with up to 10 letters on either design
for an additional $20.00 per item and back for minimum of $20.00 per line.
(Short Numeric dates only $10.00)
PERSONALIZED ORDERS CANNOT BE RETURNED. Jars made into lamps come with
off-white pleated shade. Insured UPS for lamps is $25.00 to $45.00
and up--

*We have proudly carried the
traditional apothecary / tobacco jars for over 25 years. We also carry the
BRASS REPLACEMENT LIDS for both our Delft and Olde Virginea
Jars. The lids range in price from $20.00 to $50.00 and up plus shipping,
depending on the manufacture, size and style. Most lids are the beehive style
and are lacquered brass that never needs polishing...only wiping or dusting with
a soft cloth. We also now carry a lid with a pewter-like finish for some of the
sizes and styles, however we do suggest that this particular lid looks best on
the blue jars. (The pewter-finish lids are $10.00 more each than the brass.) To
order a replacement lid for your jar, please call our store at (757) 220-1805.
We will need the information printed on the BOTTOM of your jar to include
company name and stock number or size of jar.
